PLYMOUTH - The town has demolished the old Mayfair Garage at 142 Main St. and is working toward demolishing an empty apartment house nearby.
Mayor David Merchant said the town will be getting brownfield funding from the state Department of Economic and community Development to clean up the 0.53 acre site, although he is not sure when the money will be available. The town owns both the garage and the apartment building site, due to foreclosures.
Merchant said the town has a $65,000 estimate for the cost of demolition of the white three-story apartment building near Maple Street and the Pequabuck River. The money is allocated from the town’s blight fund.
At a recent meeting, Town Council member Ana LeGassey asked if the building could be fixed up and sold rather than demolished. Merchant said the roof is leaking, the copper pipes have been stripped out, the chimney needs to be rebuilt and the siding is coming off, so it would cost money to fix up, and a band foreclosure sale several years ago brought no bidders.
The town’s Pequabuck River study and the Planning and Zoning Commission both recommended it to be torn down, he added.
The apartment building is on a 0.13 acre lot. Merchant said it’s so small he would like to combine it with the garage lot and sell them together.
Demolition is complicated by the fact that the building is so close to the river. Council member Dan Gentile noted that $35,000 of the demolition cost is actually for hazardous materials abatement due to asbestos and an oil tank in the basement.
The council has tabled demolition of 150 Main St. until April.
