The Connecticut High School girls swim and dive season wrapped up its state class tournaments this week with Southington advancing to the state open later this week in several events.
In the Class LL field, Southington’s team finished 11th, scoring 174 points as a group. The first-place team was Greenwich, who scored 785 in Wednesday’s meet.
Notable finishes for the Blue Knights include an eighth place finish by the 400 free relay team of Julia Laszewski, Emma Jekubovich, Kendall Noonan and Ella Nadeau. The time of 3:46.95 advanced them to the state open Sunday.
A near-identical relay team of Alexis Strong, Laszewski, Noonan and Nadeau took ninth in the 200 free, clocking a time of 1:42.62 to earn a spot in the state open as well.
Nadeau’s race in the individual medley saw her set a school-record time of 2:11.50, placing 11th to advance to the state open. She was also 10th in the 500 free, setting another school record at 5:14.06, to advance into the state open in the event.
The state open will be Sunday, at 2 p.m. at the Cornerstone Aquatic Center in West Hartford.
In the Tuesday’s Class L meet, Bristol Central scored 88 points for 15th and Bristol Eastern scored 36 points for 36th.
The best finish by place from either team came from Central’s 200 medley team of Isabella Cordero, Nyomi Cordero, Rayiah Reinhard and Katelyn Holleran, who finished 13th in the field at 2:03.33.
Eastern’s Alexsia Newman scored a 180.30 in diving, finishing 25th in the class. Central’s Isabello Cordero clocked a time of 1:04.06 in the 100 backstroke, finishing 17th in the class, and then finished 15th in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:12.36.
Berlin finished 15th inTuesday’s Class M girls swim and diving meet, scoring 92 points. In first was Daniel Hand with 522 points.
Notable finishes from Berlin include its 200 medley team, which finished 13th at 2:07.18. The team of Jenna Borselle, Paige Kemish, Molly Szczesniak and Bailey Baclaski swam in the race.
In the 50 yard freestyle Backlaski earned a spot at the state open, improving on her prelim time to finish fourth in the class field at 26:54. Backlaski also had a strong finish in the 100 free style, clocking a time of 57.52 for seventh in the class.
Teammate Sam Ferrero also improved her prelim score in the diving event, scoring 293.10 for 10th in the class. Szczesniak’s time of 1:05.41 was a near two second improvement from her prelim time in the 100 butterfly, placing her 11th in the field at 1:05.41.
Plainville scored 91 points in the Class S swim and dive meet, finishing 16th in the field with Weston’s 744.5 earning top billing.
Notable finished for Plainville include Vanessa Maciaszek’s time of 59.04 in the 100 freestyle, placing her 13th. She was also 17th in the 500 freestyle at 5:53.97.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Hailey Calder, Sam Shumbo, Zeel Patel and Vanessa Maciaszek was 13th in the field at 4;17.58 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Calder, Maja Grabowski, Harper Giola and Shumbo finished 16th at 1:59.46.
