PLAINVILLE – The Plainville girls volleyball team’s eight-game win streak was snapped in its 3-0 loss to Platt on Friday.

The Blue Devils fell behind early to a hungry Panthers squad and never recovered as the visitors handed Plainville its fourth loss of the season.

“Unfortunately we had one of our starters be sick at school today,” Blue Devils coach Alle Caponigro. “She wasn’t here at the game and our girls tried really, really hard and did a great job stepping into the hitting position that she normally plays. But I think in that chaos, they lost their purpose on the court. They lost their passing, lost their serving a little bit.”

Wiktoria Galazyn was the missing Plainville player and the senior’s absence proved to be key as Platt won all three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-17.

The Blue Devils played its best game in the third set as they forced the Panthers to call a timeout midway through, but Platt’s middle hitter Eva Dudley quickly turned the momentum back in her team’s favor with a couple of booming kills. Plainville could do little to stop Dudley throughout the contest as the sophomore put away multiple balls each set through spikes.

“When we’re a little bit out of position because other people are subbed into the game, it’s tough to find your footing after that,” Caponigro said.

While the Blue Devils improved as the match went on, they couldn’t find a consistent level of play that was good enough to overcome the Panthers, who moved to 7-8 with the victory.

“I think they did a great job holding it together and getting it back at the end,” Caponigro said. “But when you’re down 2-0, it’s tough to come back from that. It was just unfortunate that we started the game on our heels and it’s tough to overcome that and move into four or five games. I think that’s just a learning curve, we haven’t seen that yet, we haven’t dealt with that situation, so I think moving forward, now that’s something we’ll have seen, will know how to handle and we’ll be good.”

Friday’s defeat marks Plainville’s first loss since Sept. 21 when Hall took the match, 3-1. The Blue Devils had beaten the likes of Lewis Mills, Middletown, Tolland, Bloomfield, Northwest Catholic, Hartford Public and Wamogo (twice) during their win streak.

“I pulled them aside after the game and they were all in a good mindset,” Caponigro said. “We have a game on Monday so hopefully they’ll take the weekend to reflect a little bit and understand some of the things that I was saying mid-game, and come back and adjust it for the game on Monday.”

Plainville (11-4) will travel to Bristol Central (12-3) on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
