Sports Roundup: St. Paul girls basketball cruises to easy win over Torrington

BRISTOL - The St. Paul girls basketball team has been in a consistent rhythm over its past two games.

A day after putting up 71 points against Watertown, the Falcons finished with a 61-37 victory over Torrington on Wednesday evening.

Lily Sirois was St. Paul’s leading scorer with a game-high 15 points, while Zoey Rubins and Sophie Bogdanski each added nine points. Rubins also came away with five steals and Sarah Lindquist pulled down eight rebounds.

Lea Pergola was the Red Raiders’ leading scorer with 13 points.

The Falcons (2-1) held just a 25-18 lead at the break, but began to put the game out of reach thanks to a 22-point third quarter. They then followed it up with a 14-point fourth.

Goodwin Tech 40, Cheney Tech 23: Senior Abneliz Alamo made it rain from long range in the Gladiators fourth win of the season and second over Cheney Tech. Alamo drilled four triples in the game to lead all scorers with 14 points, sophomore Dayleen Eatmon finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds as well.

With wins of 20 and 17 points against the Beavers already this season, the Gladiators are proving to be a strong team in CTC with a 4-1 record. They host Vinal Tech on Friday, another team they’ve already beaten by 25 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Capital Prep 54, Innovation 47: The Ravens continued to be plagued by inconsistent halves.

On Wednesday, it was the once again the first 16 minutes thanks to a number of turnovers and giving up second-chance opportunities. It ultimately led to Innovation’s first loss of the season.

Down 34-21 to start the second half, Innovation managed to cut Capital Prep’s lead down to six with three minutes remaining, but was back down 11 just minutes later. The Ravens managed to cut their deficit to six again, but couldn’t get any closer than that.

Mikey Blackman led Innovation with 15 points, while Amari Cruz added 10 points, eight of which came in the final frame.

Capital Prep’s Quincy Ferguson led all scorers with 24 points, while Chris Hough contributed 11.

Terryville 79, Housatonic 38: A pair of double-doubles led the way for the Kangaroos as senior Dylan Matulis notched a career-high 29 points to go along with 13 rebounds in the 40-point win. Dominick Dao added 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the contest that brings Terryville back up .500 with the win.

Matulis knocked down four three-pointers in the game and was one of four Terryville players to score at least 10 points. The Kangaroos built their lead in the middle two quarters in which they held the Mountaineers to 10 points combined in those 16 minutes.

Up next for Terryville is a road matchup with Shepaug Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.

BOYS SWIMMING:

Plainville 87, Middletown 84: It was a good day for the Blue Devils.

Not only did they come out with the win, but they set 27 personal records in the process.

“I was happy to see the effort paying off for the swimmers,” Plainville head coach Chris Zagorski said.

Joe Michalic was a double winner for the Blue Devils, taking first in the 200 IM (2:19.26) and 100 backstroke (1:09.92), while Matt Lagassey won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:12.20.

Plainville also placed first in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Blue Devils’ next meet will be at home next Wednesday against Lewis Mills.

Southington 97, Platt/Maloney 79: The Blue Knights remain undefeated to start the season by taking down the Meriden co-op for their third win of the year. 

Southington won all 11 events at the meet highlighted by four wins for sophomore Landon Colby who touched the wall first in the individual medley (2:09.00) and 100-yard butterfly (56.04) as well as being a member of the winning teams for the medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. The 200 freestyle relay was also one of Brett Sheldrick’s four wins on the day which also included the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.05) and 500-yard freestyle (5:15.29). 

Peter Zalewski finished with a pair of relay wins as well as first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (24.54) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.61).

The Blue Knights are off until next week when they travel to Bristol to face the Bristol boys co-op.
