The Berlin, Newington, Southington and Plainville football teams eagerly waiting to kick off their respective state tournaments will have to wait one more day.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the CIAC announced on Monday morning that the state tournament quarterfinal games scheduled for Tuesday night would all be pushed back to Wednesday, in an effort to allow the host schools to prepare their facilities and clear out the snow that was expected to hit the state Monday and into Tuesday morning.
“Given the number of sites and games for the football postseason and the importance of maintaining equal and appropriate recovery for all teams, in consultation with the schools and tournament director we felt it best to reschedule the entire quarterfinal round of games,” CIAC Associate Executive Director Gregg Simon said in a statement.
All games are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and all venues will remain the same.
In the Class L state tournament, No. 7 Newington (7-3) will travel to Madison to face No. 2 Daniel Hand (10-0), while No. 6 Berlin takes (8-2) the short trip down the Berlin Turnpike to face No. 3 Maloney (9-1) at Falcon Field in Meriden. In Class LL, No. 2 Southington (9-1) hosts No. 7 Ridgefield (8-2), while in Class S, No. 7 Plainville (8-2) will head to No. 2 Bullard Havens Tech (10-0).
As a result of the games being pushed back a full 24 hours, the semifinal games originally scheduled for this Sunday will now take place on Monday, Dec. 7. All of those matchups will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the site of the higher seed.
The state championships are still scheduled for Dec. 14, with two games to take place at Trumbull High School and two at Veterans Stadium in New Britain.
