NEW BRITAIN - The Southington football team is off to a strong start to its offseason.
The Blue Knights took first place at the Nutmeg Games weight lifting competition on Saturday at New Britain High School with a total of 13,130 pounds.
Southington beat out Newtown, which finished with 12,695 pounds, for the top spot after placing second to the Nighthawks in the competition last year.
New Britain (11,285), Plainville (11,215) and Newington (10,825) were among the other local teams that took part in the event and placed sixth, ninth and 15th respectively.
The local teams also had a number of players finish in the top three of their overall weight classes.
Southington’s Dillon Kohl took first in the 161 to 180-pound bracket after lifting 1,000 combined pounds in the squat, bench press and power clean. His teammate, Angelo Plantamuro came in second place in the weight class with 925 pounds.
New Britain’s Jason Shumpert was another overall winner after taking the over 220-pound bracket with 1,220 total pounds. There was also Plainville’s Mason Sarra, who took second in the 181 to 200-pound weight class with 1,005 total pounds and Southington’s Derek Bender, who placed third in the 160 and under weight class with 785 total pounds lifted.
There were also a handful of local football players who placed in the events in each weight class.
In the 160 and under bracket, Southington’s Johnny Carreiro took second in power clean (230 pounds) and third in squat (365), while New Britain’s Jon Hernandez finished in second in the bench press (230). Plainville’s Christian Collin came in fifth in the power clean (225) with Bender placing eighth with 225 with player weight being the deciding factor between placement.
In the 161 to 180-pound class, Kohl took first in squat (435) and power clean (280), while placing fourth in the bench press (285). Plantamuro finished second in the squat (410) with Billy Carr (405) taking third.
Down in the 181 to 200-pound bracket, Sarra (515) came in second place in the squat, while Southington’s Carter Uhlman (280) placed second in the bench press and Sam Bouchard (250) third in the power clean.
Shane LaPorte was the only area player to place in an event in the 201 to 200-pound weight class after taking second in the power clean event with 265 pounds.
In the over 220-pound class, Shumpert won both the squat (625) and bench press (360), while Newington’s Rasheed Patterson took third in the power clean with 275 pounds.
