PLAINVILLE - With the final seconds ticking down in its first home game, Plainville boys basketball had the ball in the hands of Brady Callahan.

With the game in his hands, Callahan drove the lane and a double team came from SMSA.

Callahan dished the ball out to Pierre Martinez but he got a tough look at the basket and the Blue Devils dropped their first round game in the annual Rybczyk Memorial Tournament 38-37 on Wednesday night to the Tigers.

“I think what they did was they flooded the side of the floor so Brady [Callahan] couldn’t really turn the corner,” Plainville coach Marc Wesoly said. “The read was good and Pierre [Ramirez] did a really good job filling in behind him.

“It would’ve been nice if there was more time but they did a good job going with the zone in the last possession there. It was more of a matchup then anything.”

In order to get the final shot opportunity, Plainville had some work to do after a sluggish start to the game.

The Blue Devils went down 7-0 to begin the game on a pair of baskets followed up by a three pointer from SMSA’s R.J. Doucette.

“We just didn’t come out with enough energy to match them and play as competitive as they did,” Ramirez said. “That’s why we didn’t come out on top.”

With the early deficit, Plainville’s Ben Dougherty helped the Blue Devils pull back into the game with five first half points including a big three pointer after SMSA extended its lead to 15-11.

At the end of the first quarter Plainville trailed 17-14.

The second frame was more of a defensive battle back and forth.

With the Blue Devils showing more grit on both ends of the floor they outscored SMSA 8-5 in the quarter and had four different players combine for the four made field goals.

Callahan, Sam Lestini, Jailen Lindsey and Jay Mills each had a basket in the quarter to tie the game up at 22-22 going into half.

In the third quarter it was once again close and Ramirez stood out in the quarter with his hustle on both ends of the court.

With the Blue Devils down 28-26, Ramirez fought for three consecutive offensive rebounds and drew a shooting foul to get to the line.

Ramirez made the first but missed the second, pulling within one point of SMSA.

On the following possession he had a big block on the defensive end of the floor.

In the quarter Ramirez scored five of his eight points in the game, all eight coming in the second half.

With Plainville playing strong defense, SMSA was struggling offensively and at the conclusion of the third quarter Doucette had some words to say to the Blue Devils bench walking off the floor, a sign of frustration.

It was anybody’s game heading into the final frame and with the back and forth action seen in the first three quarters, it was no surprise that the game came down to the final seconds.

This time, the Blue Devils were on the wrong side of things and fell to 0-2 early in the season.

Plainville will face Haddam-Killingworth (0-3) in the third place game of the tournament today at 2:30 p.m.
