Plainville girls volleyball using early part of season to gain experience

BRISTOL - The Plainville girls volleyball team is inexperienced and that has shown in the first two matches of the season, including a 3-0 loss to Bristol Central on Monday night.

“We’re very young first off,” Plainville head coach Bob Moffo said. “We have just a couple players with a little bit of varsity experience last year.

“We need to work on serve-receive. In order to win we have to do that better and hit the ball harder.”

Against the Rams, the Blue Devils had moments where a comeback looked possible, as the server had won consecutive points. But just as Plainville was getting rolling, Bristol Central won the ball back and went on a run of its own.

In the last set against the Rams, the Blue Devils had a run of four straight points but it wasn’t enough to offset the nine-point run Bristol Central went on at the beginning of the third set, getting them off to a 8-1 lead.

But if anything, the match was definitely one that had learning points with it.

“We need to work on specific things,” Plainville’s Desiree Wesolowski said. “In practice we need to be more intense and work on communication.”

For the Blue Devils, the early season with the young group hasn’t produced the best results but the positive vibes within the team are a sign the future is going to be bright, as the potential has shown, yet consistency must be developed.

“I think we have a lot of room for improvement. But as a team we feel confident,” Plainville’s Caitlin Bradley said.

It has been a rough first couple matches for the Blue Devils, but the season is a long one and improving each game will go a long way for a younger team that hopes to only be in contention by the end of this season, but also in the next few season ahead.
