PLAINVILLE – Amid increased costs of living due to inflation, residents have been helping to keep the Plainville Community Food Pantry stocked.

Susie Woerz, executive director of the Plainville Community Food Pantry, located at 54 S. Canal St., said that residents have “stepped up to the plate” as more and more people have been turning to the food pantry for help meeting their basic needs.

“There is a lot more demand; it’s up big time,” said Woerz. “We are very appreciative of the community for their donations at this time. This is already a tough time of year because children are home from schools and, as I say, hunger doesn’t go on vacation. People also understand that there is a greater need due to higher prices of food, gas and electricity. We hope that people will continue to be able to support us.”

Items most in need at the Plainville Community Food Pantry right now include dish soap and laundry soap, pasta and rice packets, ramen noodles, shampoo, canned fruit, juice boxes, scalloped, au gratin and mashed potatoes, coffee, children’s snacks, vegetable oil, mayonnaise and condiments, sugar and salad dressing.

The Plainville Community Food Pantry is also working with the Plainville Rotary Club to collect backpacks and school supplies for children in need.

In addition, the Plainville Community Food Pantry is collecting pet supplies, which they share with Donna Weinhofer at the Plainville Pet Food Pantry, located at the Plainville Police Department. Weinhofer can be reached at 860-747-1616 to assist residents in need of pet food or supplies.

The Plainville Community Food Pantry has also created a community garden this year, with fresh peppers, tomatoes and eggplant, which they will be harvesting in the next few weeks.

Those town residents wish to receive assistance from the Plainville Community Food Pantry are encouraged to stop in and fill out an application.
