PLAINVILLE – Good Vibes Gifts & Flowers is providing people a chance to honor their deceased loved ones Nov. 2 for the Day of the Dead holiday.

Owner Melody Santos said people can bring a photo to display in the window of Good Vibes Gifts & Flowers and have it illuminated by candlelight on Nov. 2, the Day of the Dead, from 5 to 10 p.m. There the photos will be joined by displays of festively decorated skeletons or “calcas” in keeping with the Mexican holiday tradition. The Day of the Dead is meant to honor friends and loved ones who have died.

In addition, Santos is partnering with local downtown eateries including Don Bigote Mexican Restaurant, El Paso Mexican Restaurant and Hop Haus, whom she said are creating Day of the Dead specials. Those who eat these meals that day, and show her a proof of receipt, can get a complimentary rose. Roses are limited to one per person per receipt.

Santos said she came up with the idea as a means to promote other downtown businesses and bring diversity to downtown.

“I want to try to encourage people to come to downtown Plainville for the Day of the Dead,” she said. “I’m doing this in order to promote our restaurants and to bring something unique and cultural downtown. I thought that the roses and candle displays would be a nice way for people to remember their loved ones, especially after everything we’ve been through recently.”
