PLAINVILLE – The Wheeler Regional Family YMCA’S 13th Annual O’Mazing Race community scavenger hunt returns Sept. 18 at the VFW.

Teams of three or four will depart from the VFW at 8 Northwest Driver to participate in a two-hour scavenger hunt throughout the community. Each year, teams receive a different list of challenges to complete, items to collect, riddles to solve and videos to take to earn points. After the scavenger hunt is complete, teams will return to the VFW for awards and a party with beer and wine provided by Worldwide Wine & Spirits in Southington from 7 to 10 p.m.

Proceeds from the O’Mazing Race support the YMCA’s annual campaign and its efforts to provide financial assistance to families who would otherwise be unable to afford their programs and services such as summer camp and childcare.

Mary Perlini, business manager with the Wheeler Regional YMCA, said the event has seen strong participation and support from local businesses over the years due to it being so unique.

“It’s not just another run or wine tasting,” she said. “It’s a fun night out with friends that supports a really good cause. It’s also great for team-building.”

Last year, the O’Mazing race was able to be held, despite covid-19 restrictions, with teams installing the “Goose Chase” app and driving around town in their cars. This year, the race will be back to its usual format but the app will still be utilized instead of paper lists to help teams calculate their points.

“It cuts down a lot on the judging time,” Perlini said.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this year’s O’Mazing Race. To become a sponsor, call the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA at 860-793-9631 and ask for Mary Perlini or email her at mary.perlini@ghymca.org.

The cost for a team to participate in the O’Mazing Race is $200 or $50 per person. To sign-up, visit p2p.onecause.com/omazingrace or stop in at the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA at 149 Farmington Ave.
