PLAINVILLE - Space is filling up fast for Plainville Public Library’s “Mission Solar System” escape room, which is being offered July 16 for ages 6 to 10 and July 17 for ages 11 or older.

Organizer Jessica Nelson, children’s librarian at the library at 56 E. Main St., said that participants will go into the escape room, which will be held in the conference room, in groups of six.

There, they will be presented with a storyline about a rocket mission and then will have 45 minutes to “escape” from the room by following clues, cracking codes and solving puzzles related to the story. The escape room will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. on both July 16 and July 17. All space for the July 16 4 to 5 p.m. time slot is currently full.

“Escape rooms have been very popular for a few years now,” said Nelson. “They encourage teamwork, creative thinking and leadership. They also teach kids the importance of speaking up.”

This is the second escape room activity that the library has sponsored. In April, the library held another called “Candy Caper,” which Nelson said filled up fast.

“It was such a huge hit that kids kept asking us when we would do another one,” said Nelson. “We’re offering time slots for different age groups so that things can be a little more challenging for the older kids. There will be more distractions and ‘red herrings’ in the room for the older age group. With the younger kids, we might help them along by playing ‘hot/cold’ but we try to let them solve the problems themselves if they can. There are only two hint cards to give them clues.”

The library uses escape rooms from the website , which she said was created by a teacher. The website sends the library a kit with different lockboxes used in the escape room as well as other supplies and instructions.

Participants in the escape room must register in advance. People do not need to register as teams - once a time slot is filled all who register go in together. To register, visit For more information, call 860-793-1450.
