BRISTOL - A Plainville man on probation for having sex with a teenage girl was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Monday for stealing a car in New Britain and putting a smoldering mattress inside a dumpster in Plainville.
Jose Figueroa, 37, of 16 Whiting St., Plainville, accepted a plea bargain in Bristol Superior Court. He pleaded guilty during the hearing Monday to charges of third-degree larceny and second-degree reckless endangerment. He also admitted to violating his probation.
Figueroa was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, suspended after service of 30 months, and seven years of probation.
Figueroa was on probation for a 2014 conviction of second-degree sexual assault. According to the state’s sex offender registry, this case involved sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old who was known to Figueroa. In 2014, he was sentenced to eight years in prison, suspended after service of 18 months, and 10 years of probation.
In 2017, Figueroa admitted to violating his probation. He was given a second chance and continued on probation following the first violation.
Most recently, court officials said Monday, Figueroa had a 13-year-old in his apartment and tested positive for methadone while on probation.
He was also arrested by New Britain police on Feb. 7 and charged with stealing a car in their city from a gas station, prosecutors said. The vehicle has since been returned to its owner, according to prosecutors.
Figueroa was also arrested in Plainville on Sept. 7 after putting a smoldering mattress into a dumpster of an apartment building, “endangering people” in the area, prosecutors said.
