PLAINVILLE - The new director of Plainville Public Library, Trish Tomlinson, introduced herself to the community Tuesday during an open house.
Tomlinson accepted the position as the new director of the library at 56 E. Main St. in the beginning of May and her first day was June 5. Formerly the director of the Durham Public Library, she said she has served in every position imaginable in a library and was looking forward to meeting the Plainville community.
“I have had my eye on this library for quite a while and I’ve always admired the beauty of it,” she said. “After I took a couple years off from libraries due to family matters, I was eager to get back to working at one. I get a lot of warmth from this building and the people who have come in have been very friendly to me. Plainville Public Library has that real small town charm.”
As director, Tomlinson said she hopes to apply for grants that will allow her to expand the library’s digital offerings and provide computer-use classes for those who may not be technically inclined or own a computer of their own.
“I also want to speak to the public and find out what types of programs they would like to see more of,” she said.
Tomlinson said she has been to Plainville prior to accepting the position because her husband works in the Sports Center at ESPN in nearby Bristol.
“I love J. Timothy’s,” she said. “It’s a big ESPN hangout.”
Tomlinson thanked Plainville leaders for letting her come to serve as director. She said she considers it to be a “privilege” to be there.
Town Manager Robert E. Lee, who interviewed Tomlinson when she applied for the position, said she has both the experience and personality to move the local library forward.
“She was also very impressive to the library’s Board of Directors,” said Lee. “I look forward to her working with us here.”
