PLAINVILLE - A local woman has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in connection with the stabbing of her boyfriend, which the couple insists was accidental.

Stacey Jankowski 47, of 78 Welch St., accepted a plea bargain Tuesday in Bristol Superior Court, receiving probation in lieu of prison time.

She pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree assault, reduced from first-degree assault.

During the hearing, state prosecutor Paul Rotiroti said he would have had a difficult time convicting Jankowski of first-degree assault.

“They both claim it was an accident,” he said of the pair involved in the incident of Oct. 18, 2017.

According to Rotiroti, the victim is not concerned for his safety and does not want Jankowski prosecuted.

According to the police, Jankowski told investigators that she and her boyfriend were hanging out that day and that she had found a knife in the car he was renting.

She said the two got out of the vehicle and she accidentally stabbed him while hugging him, the report continued.

The victim told a similar story, but police questioned their version of events, based on his height and the severity of the wound.

He was stabbed in the abdomen and had to undergo surgery to determine if any organs had been damaged.

The couple didn’t call for help after the incident, which happened in front of his home on New Britain Avenue, but instead drove to the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain, police said.

Hospital officials called Plainville police to report that they were treating a stabbing victim, according to the report.

In exchange for Jankowski’s plea, charges of first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct were dropped.

She was sentenced Tuesday to one year in prison, suspended, and two years of probation.
