PLAINVILLE - A lot is happening at Wheeler Regional YMCA. It will be wrapping up renovations to its wellness center, and Healthy Kids Day is coming up.
Healthy Kids Day will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, outdoors at the YMCA at 149 Farmington Ave. In the event of rain, it will instead be held indoors at the Y’s gym.
Visitors can enjoy free burgers and hot dogs donated by Gnazzos, participate in activities and games such as face painting and obstacle courses and stop at booths for 20 local businesses for information and giveaways.
Local police and firefighters will also be bringing their vehicles for children to check out.
“This is a great family fun day,” said Tim Gabbard, youth development director at the YMCA. “It’s also a way to get people exposed to local businesses and what we have to offer at our Y and our summer camp, which opened for registration in January. Most of our counselors will be on hand that day and parents can speak to them about our programs. It’s a win-win for everybody participating and last year we saw as many as 200 visitors. With the free food, which is new this year, we’ll probably have even more.”
Gabbard said that in addition to the YMCA’s Halloween, Santa and Spinathon programming, this is one of its major community events.
As for the wellness center, Gabbard said renovations began April 6. The center is on track to be completed and to reopen Saturday for Healthy Kids Day.
“We’re going through a huge renovation,” said Gabbard. “We’re putting in new flat-screen TVs, brand new equipment, streaming music over speakers and new lighting. We’re repainting it to make the colors pop more and we’re knocking down a wall and a half-wall to open up the space more. We’re also putting in a rubberized floor, which will reduce impact and noise, and a free workout area with a turf floor.”
