PLAINVILLE – Town Manager Robert E. Lee said that Plainville Public Library’s parting ways with previous director Doug Lord had nothing to do with any misconduct.

“From what I understand, it was a mutual parting of the ways,” said Lee on Tuesday. “There was no incident that spurred his departure and there were no issues raised at the library regarding improper behavior. Doug did a lot of good things during his time at the library and hopefully he has just decided to move on to bigger and better things.”

Lee noted that Lord did not announce that he had been hired to a new position at another library when he left.

Lord’s last day at the library, Lee said, was Nov. 3. Carrie Burgess, who was previously assistant director at the library, is now the interim director.

“The Library Board said that a decision will be made after the holidays regarding what to do with the position,” said Lee. “They will decide at that time if they want to elevate Carrie Burgess to become the new director or if they want to advertise for someone new to fill the position.”

Lee said that while the library decides who its director will be, they are not responsible for every position. The assistant director position that Burgess previously held was raised at Monday’s council meeting as an example of an open position which the council could choose not to fill. This was one of many options that Lee gave for possible means to make up cuts to state aid.

“The council would not make that decision unilaterally,” Lee clarified. “They would want to have the library’s input and to discuss the impact should they choose not to fill the position. The council has formed a committee that will be looking at every open position and reviewing it. The budget won’t be easy to fix. If there is a reduction in expenses, it will impact the services that we are able to provide to the community.”

Lord was previously a librarian at the New Britain Public Library and he had assumed the director position after the retirement of his predecessor, Peter Chase, in November 2015.
