Christine C. Assard (Foote), age 82, of Bethlehem, Conn., formerly of Waterford, Conn., passed away on Aug. 28, 2021. She is predeceased by her father, George Foote; mother, Anne Foote; and husband, Gerald Assard. She is survived by her sons, George Assard (Maria), of Bolton, Conn., Joseph Assard (Kelly), of Montville, Conn.; daughter, Jessica Assard-Wu (Mike), of West Hartford, Conn.; grandchildren, Nicholas Assard, Julia Assard, Alyssa Birch, Shelby Birch, Samuel Assard, Charles John Lelek (Katiera), Magnus Luke Burgess, Kaylin Wu, Dylan Wu; great-grandchildren, Savannah Birch, Mason Winkle, Elijah Lelek, Declan Lelek, Kaelynne Lelek, Chase Lelek; and brother, Richard Foote (Gail), of Terryville, Conn.

Christine was born and raised in Terryville. She graduated from Terryville High School in 1957, earned her BA in Education from Central Connecticut State University, and an MA in Community Psychology from the University of New Haven. After living in Bermuda and Italy with her husband and children for several years, her family settled in Waterford. Christine was a dedicated Literacy Volunteer and served as the Director of Literacy Volunteers of Southeast Connecticut for many years. She retired to Bethlehem, Conn., where she volunteered with the Bethlehem Public Library, serving as President of Friends of the Library, as well as a board member; and volunteered with the Bethlehem Fair.

Christine is remembered most for her love of books and staunch advocacy for making reading more accessible. For years, Christine ran the Bethlehem Library Book Sale where folks were always greeted with her smiling face. She loved to entertain family and friends at her home, where there were always fresh baked goods she prepared. Christine especially loved her grandchildren, often bragging about them to anyone who would listen. Always fond of dogs, Christine is also survived by Mack, her son’s English Setter, who she frequently babysat when her son’s family went on vacation.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12:00 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville.  Burial will be in Carmel Hill Cemetery, Bethlehem. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Alzheimer's Association or Literacy Volunteers.
