HARTFORD - After serving as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the New Britain Board of Finance and Taxation and as New Britain’s corporation counsel, Gennaro Bizzarro is now a state senator, representing the 6th District.
During his induction ceremony Monday, Bizzarro was accompanied by family, friends and colleagues who looked up to him as he raised his right hand and took the oath of office.
Lt. Gov, Susan Bysiewicz swore him in and said it was a pleasure to have his “beautiful family” taking part in the event.
“What an honor it is to be conducting this swearing in,” Bysiewicz said. “Governor Lamont and I are looking forward to working with you, Senator.”
Bizzarro, a Republican who will be representing New Britain, Berlin and part of Farmington, won a special election last week.
“I thank you and look forward to working with you and the governor,” Bizzarro told Bysiewicz. “I want to thank Senator (Len) Fasano (R-North Haven) for all his assistance during my campaign and for being there for me. I would like to thank all my new Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know all of you in addition to working with you to make Connecticut a better place to live in. I’d like to thank, of course, all of the many supporters that I have throughout the entire 6th district. This was an incredibly humbling experience.”
Bizzarro also thanked his predecessor, Democrat Terry Gerratana, for her hard work and said he looks forward to following up on that work.
He also expressed words of gratitude to the people at the ceremony supporting him, particularly his wife, daughters and his parents.
New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and other city officials also took part in the event.
“I’m so excited for Senator Bizzarro,” Stewart said. “Today is just such an exciting day for the 6th District. There is not a man that would work harder on behalf of this district. I’m looking forward to all the good work that he is going to do on behalf of our community here.”
“I’m very proud of Gennaro and all the work he put in into the campaign and now I’m excited because I know that the same amount of effort that he put into the campaign, he is going to put in as a state senator,” Alderman Kristian Rosado said.
Bizzarro competed for the seat against New Britain Democrat Rick Lopes. Bizzarro received 1,862 votes from New Britain, 1,819 from Berlin and 203 from Farmington. Lopes won 2,210 votes in New Britain, 879 in Berlin and 160 in Farmington.
“We are here today because all of you helped me not just in terms of success in this campaign but also success in life,” Bizzarro said after he took the oath of office. “Because of all of you, I am the man that I am, the son, the husband and father that I am, so I thank all of you and I look forward to working with all of you on behalf of the residents of the 6th District and the entire state of Connecticut. Thank you all very much.”
