Ruth Messinger Gilman, 98, passed away peacefully at Meadowbrook of Granby, on May 16, 2018. She was born on February 28, 1920, to Adin Freeman and Mabel (Taft) Messinger. Ruth was married for 70 years to Bernard Gilman, who predeceased her in 2011. She and Bernie raised their four children in Bristol, Conn., where they maintained their home for over 65 years.
Ruth remained vital and active well into her 90s, driving herself to visit friends and relatives and going to the Senior Center to exercise, then out for coffee with “the girls.” She was a gracious, caring woman who took a genuine interest in others; and a beloved mother, grandmother and “GGMa” who delighted in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a lifelong avid reader, a faithful journal writer and an elegant practitioner of the lost art of letter writing. At age 93 Ruth moved to Village Gate in Farmington, where she made many new friends and took full advantage of the activities from bingo to yoga to Wii bowling. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jones and partner, Mark Pohlenz, daughter Lori Barker and husband, Ernie Barker, son, Gary Gilman and wife, Marion Cooper, son, Adin Gilman and wife, Susan Olmsted, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her oldest and dearest friend, Lila Burns, and her husband, Bob.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Meadowbrook of Granby, for taking such wonderful care of Ruth during her last years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ruth’s honor may be made to the Manross Memorial Library, 260 Central St., Bristol, CT 06010.
