Matthew Ryan Merrell, 33-year-old resident of Locust Grove, Okla., passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018.

Matt was born on July 30, 1984, to James Edward Merrell and Carla Marie (Stephens) Brewer in Tulsa, Okla. and often called his mother MaMa and his father as Pops.

Matt attended Rockport High School in Rockport, Mass. before moving to Connecticut. Matt was a hard worker and stickler for details. He had a paper route while in Rockport, saving his money to buy his first red guitar and made sure his customers got their papers even in blizzard conditions.

Matt loved music and played the bass guitar, as well as guitar and harmonica. Matt was a very kind and sensitive soul. He loved animals, especially dogs and rabbits. Matt was fun to be around and was known for his sense of humor and was incredibly intelligent. Matt was an avid reader and often reread books several times to make sure he didn’t miss anything. He had a passion for cooking and enjoyed sharing his creations with friends and family. Matt worked in several restaurants in both Connecticut and Oklahoma.

Matt was a beloved little brother to his sisters and a loving uncle to his nephew and nieces.

Matthew is survived by his father, Jim, and (Linda) Merrell of Orlando, Fla.; and his mother, Carla, and (Bobby) Brewer of Locust Grove, Okla.; two sisters, Shannon Bigot (David) of Orlando, Fla., Stephanie Merrell (Mat) of Charleston, S.C.; a step-sister, Katie Denoncourt (Paul) of Bristol; and a step-brother, Andy Munn of Prescott, Mich. He also leaves his nephew, Hunter; four nieces, Jasmine, Amia, Abigail and Alice; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

Matt believed in Jesus Christ and has finally found peace.
