Richard Joseph Brown, 76, of Newington, beloved son of the late Rose Mary (Zysk) Brown and Joseph Brown, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017.

He was a 1958 graduate of New Britain High School. He majored in engineering at the University of Connecticut, where he graduated in 1967. Following graduation, Richard was employed at Dynage Electronics in Bloomfield. While at the university, Richard suffered a medical incident that caused paralysis in both legs. He endured months of rehabilitation, but did not recover his mobility. In spite of his disability, Richard maintained high spirits throughout his life. He was able to fish from a specially equipped boat at Bashan Lake in East Haddam, where he caught several record-setting largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Richard is survived by sisters Doris McKee of Pasadena, Calif., and Karen Lombardi and her husband, Jim of Newington. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family gives special thanks to his caregiver, Lisa Mattison, and to his cousin, Tom Heisler, for his frequent visits and fishing excursions to wheelchair accessible sites along the Salmon River.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at 10 a.m., meeting directly at Church of the Holy Spirit, Newington, followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. There are no calling hours and arrangements have been entrusted to Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be sent to: WJMJ Catholic Radio, 15 Peach Orchard Road, Prospect, CT 06712-1052.
