SUGAR LAND, Texas - The slow start the New Britain Bees had hoped to avoid this season continued again on Tuesday.
This time it was Kyle Simon’s turn.
The right-hander surrendered four runs in the fourth inning as the Bees fell to the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-1.
New Britain has now lost five straight to start the season.
Simon gave up all five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits over five innings. He also struck out and walked two.
The Skeeters batted around in the bottom half of the fourth with all their runs coming on five consecutive hits. A bases-loaded RBI single by Albert Cordero started the scoring and was followed up with a two-run double from Courtney Hawkins.
A Matt Chavez single drove home Sugar Lands’ final run in the fifth.
The Bees, however, didn’t get on the board until the top of the eighth on a home run from Angelys Nina. Overall, New Britain managed just three hits up till that point and struggled against Skeeters starter Ben Griset.
The left-hander tossed five clean innings, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Sugar Land struck out 13 Bees batters overall.
