NEW BRITAIN - New Britain native and Houston Astros All-Star outfielder George Springer is partnering with local businesses in Central Connecticut to support relief efforts for the Houston area in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

On Friday, Sept. 8, the New Britain Bees, Siracusa Moving & Storage and Premier Limousine will hold a “Pack the Truck” event at New Britain Stadium, starting at 1 p.m., to collect donated items for those impacted by the storm. The Bees will host the Sugar Land (Texas) Skeeters that night for a doubleheader starting at 5:35 p.m.

“On behalf of the Springer Family, we encourage your support for the victims of the devastation in Houston,” Springer said in a press release. “We appreciate your generosity in this time of need. No contribution is too small.”

The following items are being collected for the “Pack the Truck” event: Blankets, air mattresses, batteries, flashlights and pet food; food (no glass products, easy accessibility, anything non-perishable in boxes) - water, Gatorade or Powerade (liquid or powder), canned foods (beans, fruit, tuna, etc.), cereal, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, crackers and rice; baby items - wipes, diapers, baby food, formula, bottles and baby clothes; clothing - sweatshirts, pants and new packages of socks and underwear (any size); personal hygiene - toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, deodorant, feminine products, toilet paper and razors.

Donations will be accepted starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, at New Britain Stadium, as well as Siracusa Moving & Storage (250 Commerce Circle, New Britain) and Premier Limousine (76 Fuller St., Berlin).

Local organizations partnering in the donation efforts include A1 Automotive and the Connecticut Blue Jays AAU travel baseball team. Any local organization that wishes to assist can contact Nicole Springer at nspringer@nbbees.com. Any person who donates will receive a voucher to the doubleheader between the Bees and Skeeters on Sept. 8, as well as 10 percent off a trip with Premier Limousine.

“Our hearts are with all that have been affected by the flooding in Texas,” Bees majority owner Anthony Iacovone said in the release. “We hope that others will join New Britain in giving something to help the residents of Houston and the surrounding areas get through this terrible time.”

The Bees staff will be collecting monitary donations at each game for the remainder of the regular season.

Fans can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to support the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Houston and the surrounding area in Texas affected by the hurricane.
