NEW BRITAIN - It took just one inning for the New Britain Bees to end a long day empty handed.

Nate Roe gave up three runs in the fifth inning and Brandon Fry surrendered another as the Bees got swept in their doubleheader against the Sugar Land Skeeters Tuesday afternoon, losing the second game 6-4 of their makeshift road series due to Hurricane Harvey.

New Britain lost the first game 1-0 after Mike Hepple surrendered a walk-off single to Kevin Ahrens with two outs. The Bees managed just two hits in Game 1.

After New Britain’s offense had just given the right-hander a two-run lead with three runs in the top half of the frame on a Craig Maddox fielder’s choice and a Jamar Walton single, Roe gave up back-to-back-to-back singles to Bryan Pounds, Albert Cordero and Joe Benson begin the fifth.

That was enough to signal a pitching change and Fry took over with no outs and the bases loaded. Roe finished the afternoon with four-plus innings pitched, five hits and five runs. He struck out five and walked none.

But Fry had just as much trouble as Roe. After retiring the first two batters he faced, Fry issued a bases loaded walk to Caleb Ramsey and then a bases-clearing double to Anthony Giansanti, putting Sugar Land up 6-4, the final score.

It was New Britain, however, that managed to get on the board first. Jake McGuiggan hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Bees an early 1-0 lead. The Skeeters then scored twice in the third on Benson’s two-run homer before Maddox and Walton put the Bees back ahead in the fifth.

New Britain managed to bring the tying run to the plate three time after Maddox’s one out-single. Jon Griffin sent him to third with a single of his own, but Walton and Conor Bierfeldt struck out and flew out to end the game.

The Bees will look to split the series in the finale at 10:05 a.m.
