PENNYSLVANIA - Michael Bacaâ€™s go ahead single in the sixth inning held up to give the New Britain Bees a 4-2 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Bees bullpen was dominant in the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball to close out the game.
Nate Roe, Brandon Fry, Casey Coleman, Brandon League and Shawn Gilblair all threw scoreless relief after Greg Nappo exited the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Bees jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning behind Conor Bierfeldt 17th blast of the year. Jon Griffin doubled the lead with an RBI single to score Jordan Hinshaw.
The Barnstormers responded with a pair of runs of themselves in the bottom of the fifth against Greg Nappo, who made his fourth start of the season.
With a runner on second and two outs for the Barnstormers, Sean Halton hit an RBI single to cut the Bees lead in half and advanced to second on the throw. Steve Clevenger followed with an RBI single of his own to knot the game up at two apiece.
Nappo was relieved by Roe and he get the final out of the inning to limit further damage.
The Bees retook the lead in the sixth inning. After back-to-back hits by Hinshaw and Griffin, Michael Crouse recorded an out before Baca would give the Bees a 3-2 lead.
Griffin capped off his perfect night at the plate with a home run in the eighth to give his bullpen an important insurance run.
Gilblair pitched in the ninth and closed the door for the win.
