To the Editor:
Our congresswoman is the real deal! I’m proud that Jahana Hayes is our 5th Dstrict congresswoman. She represents us - all of us - in this strangely constructed grouping of cities and towns, and does it with integrity and hard work.
Since volunteering in her 2018 campaign, I have paid close attention during her two years in the House of Representatives. She researches carefully, reads each bill thoughtfully, and chooses what to initiate or co-sponsor based on a clear understanding of both the U.S. Constitution and of the needs of the people of Connecticut, and of the United States. And she DOES understand our needs, especially here in this very diverse district!
Whether we are small farmers, suburban or urban families, veterans, children or old people, people of low income or even if we’re comfortable economically, she recognizes that all of us have struggles, and she takes seriously the federal responsibility to make it possible for all of us to live our lives well, especially at this crazy time of lockdown. As a high school teacher (and 2016 National Teacher of the Year), Congresswoman Hayes’s natural expertise is public education. Impressed by her strong, passionate, thoughtful (and often lonely) advocacy for public schools during her first term, I am confident that she will do even more in a second term, and beyond, to fight for legislation allowing public school teachers to prepare children to be ready for the world. More, she will continue to collaborate with Congressional colleagues to reimagine, reform and remake the world to be ready for them!
