To The Editor:
Once again, the Suburban Woman’s Club of New Britain is looking for support from our community to help us continue to raise the necessary funds to enable our club to continue the work that we do on behalf of the veterans living at Veterans Inc. on Arch Street and also for the veterans who live at the Veteran’s Home in Rocky Hill.
This will be the eighth year that our club has undertaken this project and we now look to you, the members of our community, for your support.
Flags are again being sold for $10 for each flag and each flag will have the name of the honoree - a veteran, living or deceased, or for someone who is currently serving in the Armed Forces. Flags will be placed on the Green on Franklin Square and may be picked up following the city’s parade on Wednesday, May 30, the date that the city celebrates Memorial Day. Flags that are not picked up will then be used the following year.
In the past, funds that we have raised through “Flags on the Green” have made it possible for us to purchase a big screen television set, a sofa, gas grill, a lovely outdoor bench, party size coffee maker as well as bringing our veterans decorated cakes for each of the holidays.
Members also donate groceries, towels, socks and personal hygiene items for our vets and at Christmas time, members also purchase individual Christmas gifts for these veterans.
We also encourage our local veterans groups to purchase flags in memory of/or in honor of members of their organizations and we now look to you, our neighbors and friends, to show your support for these men and women who have taken time out of their lives to serve our country and to protect our freedoms. Those wishing to purchase a flag, or flags, are asked to call Mary Lou Mancini at 860-225-3423. Also serving on the committee are Carin Mancini and Laura Napoletano.
We hope that we can count on your support. So please, get out your check book now, purchase a flag (or flags) and help us to help our local veterans.
