To the Editor:
The following is a reply that was sent to Michael Reagan relative to his article that appeared in the May 13th edition of the Bristol Press.
Michael, your dad must be smiling after reading your last article.
The first words of the article, “I give up” sums up what I have had to say to myself on many recently reported events. The lack of rational thinking, basic common sense is beyond belief. What is even more unbelievable is how many Americans still believe that there is some merit in these matters.
The legislative branch many years ago realized that term limits for presidential candidates was a wise thing. Generations of legislatures have come and gone with no serious moves to impose that mandate upon the legislature. The reason is simple. They have full-time pay for a part-time job.
A 60 Minutes program that aired some time ago clearly indicated how much time was spent generating funds for the party. Including direct and indirect time, it far exceeded their time in session.
There are still individuals of limited means who become legislators. Their party will foot the bill to get them elected. There are no long-term legislators who leave that position with limited means, however. Simple arithmetic will clearly indicate that those funds were not generated from their salary. In addition, their benefit package is so far beyond any other packages that there is no easy way to make a comparison.
One area where the legislative branch excels is recess. Why are so many legislators opposing Trump? Because he wants to drain the swamp and the legislative alligators don’t want to lose that quagmire.
I agree that Donald Trump is not perfect. One of his weaknesses is lacking the polish that existed in your dad. What he is not lacking, however, is the ability, strength and endurance to do what is required to give this nation back to the people. Your dad summarized it well when he stated: “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.
