Local teams earn medals in Nutmeg State Games roller hockey tournaments

NEW BRITAIN – The Nutmeg State Games roller hockey tournaments concluded Sunday at Trinity College and local teams were scattered throughout the competitions.

Berlin-based Zrink Selects took the silver medal in the open Gold Division, losing to Connecticut Coasters from Enfield 8-1 in the gold medal game. Zrink Selects went 1-0-1 in the round-robin stage of the tournament and then defeated Newington-based Shake & Bake 10-8 in the tournament’s semifinal round.

Shake & Bake earned the bronze medal for the division with a 6-5 win over Unnecessary Sauce. They went 1-1 in the round robin and then topped Lil Ball from Manchester in the play-in round before losing to Zrink Selects.

The Coasters went undefeated en route to a gold medal in the Gold Division, posting a 4-0 record and scoring at least six goals in three of their games.

The Silver Division open featured a larger selection of teams and four teams from the local area, two of which met in the gold medal game. The Newington Fire Ants completed an undefeated tournament by taking down the Terryville Predators 4-3 for a gold medal. The Predators won all four of its round robin games before losing to the Fire Ants and scored at least six goals in all of their wins.

The Bronze Medal contest featured two teams from out of state as the Bandits from Bridgewater, Massachusetts bested the Rhode Island-based East Coast Impact 4-1.

Team Ocho from Plainville split its four round robin games with its two losses coming against the Predators (6-4) and the Bandits (5-1). Also from Plainville, Team Joe Mama won two of its round robin matchups with its losses coming against the teams that played for medals. Joe Mama fell to the Fire Ants 7-1 and lost to the Impact 5-1.
