The East Regional champion of the National Collegiate Boxing Association’s national tournament will be crowned in Bristol.

The University of Connecticut Boxing Team is teaming with the Bristol Boys and Girls Club to host the NCBA’s eastern regional qualifying tournament.

The NCBA, a group member of USA Boxing, has been the governing body of college boxing since 1976 and has never held a regional in Connecticut.

The tournament will be held March 15-17 at the Bristol Boys and Girls Club.

Matches will start at 5 p.m. Friday, and the finals are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. The remaining final bouts will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Boxers will be crowned in 12 weight classes - 112, 119, 125, 132, 139, 147, 156, 165, 175, 185, 195 and heavyweight.

Past national champions for the men’s and women’s teams included boxers from the three top-tier United States military schools (Air Force, Army, Navy), the University of Nevada-Reno, West Virginia, Washington and California-Davis.

This regional is the final step for collegiate boxers to earn a right to represent their university in the national tournament, which will be held April 4-6 in Reno, Nev.
