BRISTOL - The Bristol Central girls volleyball team is off to a fantastic start. After sweeping Ellington in the first match, Bristol Central once again had a sweep on Monday, this time of Plainville.
With the early season performance, Bristol Central thinks that the state tournament is a realistic goal.
“Overall the court play itself is getting better,” Bristol Central head coach Holly Willette said. “We’re kind of finding that team chemistry.”
With the strong upperclassmen to go along with the younger players, other teams are taking notice.
“Spot serving they [Bristol Central] did a great job,” Plainville head coach Bob Moffo said. “I’ve known the coach there for years. She runs a great program. They have good hard hitters, pass very well and overall a very good team. We’re very impressed with them.”
Two of the strong suits for Bristol Central are the ability to spot the ball on the court and do so with power.
Against Plainville, Bristol Central saw many of its balls hit the open floor with Plainville having no opportunity to return.
“I feel like we definitely should have communicated more, but with all of the changes I feel like we were able to pull through and execute it,” Xia’Ian Carrasco said.
Carrasco is a force at the net for Central.
“We have a couple returning varsity players that really stepped up last year,” Willette said. “With their experience from last year and how much they improved and how hard they have worked to get to this point, it really helps; and we have a good sophomore class as well that was on the varsity court as well last year and they’re really holding their own.”
While seeing the early success, Bristol Central isn’t taking any of it for granted.
“I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where this season takes us. Definitely looking forward to the conference tournament,” Willette said.
