NEWINGTON – A popular gym was evacuated Thursday morning after an employee taking out the trash at 7:53 a.m. discovered what appeared to be a live hand grenade in the garbage, police said.

All the members of LA Fitness who were exercising were told to leave the building as police converged on the scene, Sgt. Christopher Perry said.

Newington firefighters placed fire engines at all entrances to the parking lot of the building and the Hartford police bomb squad was called in to investigate.

The grenade was located in a garbage can right outside the building, Perry said.

The bomb squad determined within an hour that the grenade was likely a training device that was hallowed out, Perry said. “There were no explosives inside and the fuse had been used,” Perry said. “It was totally inert.”

Police will now be looking at the gym’s video cameras to try and determine who left the device in the trash, Perry said.

LA Fitness resumed operations at about 9:15 a.m.
