FARMINGTON - Torigen Pharmaceuticals, which creates vaccines for the veterinary industry, was recently selected U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy as “Murphy’s Innovator of the Month.”
Located at 400 Farmington Avenue, Torigen Pharmaceuticals focuses on tissue vaccines and autologous immunotherapy.
According to Torigen Pharmaceuticals website, tissue vaccines are produced from harvested tumor material and don’t undergo in vitro culture to select tumor cell clones. The company’s approach to immunotherapy utilizes part of a patient’s own tumor to create a customized treatment.
“Torigen is proof that Connecticut is a destination for innovation, and that our state will continue to do a lot of good in the world,” Murphy said in his announcing statement. “Torigen is using cutting-edge research and data to ultimately save lives of pets who play such an important role in many people’s lives.”
Ashley Kalinauskas is the founder and CEO of Torigen Pharmaceuticals. She has a degree in pathobiology from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. Kalinauskas stated her business after her thesis project.
The business’ first product was an experimental autologous cancer vaccine, based on the research of Dr. Mark Suckow, a former professor at University of Notre Dame. Suckow now serves as the chief technology officer at Torigen Pharmaceuticals.
According to Murphy’s announcement, Kalinauskas founded her business in 2016 and has treated more than 500 dogs and cats. The business serves as an employer to 10 people and it also provides internship opportunities.
“For years, I knew I wanted to marry the scientific and business worlds,” Kalinauskas said in the press release.
“Connecticut gave me the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between these fields, creating endless entrepreneurial opportunities. Torigen wouldn’t be where it is today without the financial support of Connecticut. The funding we have received to date goes to help grow the business, form strategic partnerships and collaborations, and helps move the needle for Connecticut and our company,” she continued.
Torigen Pharmaceuticals received the 2018 Animal Health Innovation of the Year award and Kalinauskas was recognized as Connecticut Entrepreneur of the Year.
