GROTON - LBI Corp. is a naval system developer that has been offering its services since 1971, providing customers with remotely operated vehicles, underwater gliders, arctic buoys and more.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy recently recognized LBI, a business that originally made and designed sailboats, as “Murphy’s Monday Manufacturer.” Some of LBI’s sailboat designs are the Mystic 20 Cat, the Mystic Ali Cat 20, and the Legnos 35 Commercial power boat.

The business is located at 973 North Road and it was founded by its current president, Peter Legnos.

Over the years, LBI has served companies such as General Dynamics Electric Boat and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in New London.

“I’m proud to highlight Peter and LBI Corp. for almost 50 years of service to the manufacturing industry in Connecticut,” Murphy said. “Their designs and products help our Navy keep us safe. I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.”

In the 1980s, LBI worked to consult on methods for application of the Special Hull Treatment for the Mold-in-Place program for the Seawolf-class and Virginia-class submarines. The company’s collaborations also include the development and research of the “Innovative Naval Prototype” for the office of Naval Research and Mine Hunting and Neutralization Systems for Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Pacific.

“LBI is dedicated to developing, engineering and manufacturing the best systems for the Naval and Maritime community,” Legnos said.

The Naval Surface Warefare Center Carderock Combatant Craft Division recently awarded LBI a five-year, $5.4 million contract to manufacture and design a carbon fiber composite launch and recovery system for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles.
