NEW BRITAIN - A Plainville man who admitted to sexually assaulting a girl over the span of several years, including a rape in a New Britain High School office, was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday.

Jason Mussman, 28, of 27 Washburn Drive, had been charged in September 2016 with six counts of first-degree sexual assault and six counts of risk of injury to a child.

Mussman is accused of assaulting the girl beginning in 2006, when she was 11, police said. Other incidents occurred in 2009 and 2010, police said. The assaults were reported to police in June 2016.

The girl told police that Mussman was a family friend who first raped her at a graduation party at her home in 2006. She was 11 at the time and he was 18, a warrant for his arrest said.

He raped her again in the parking lot of Gaffney Elementary School when she was a freshman at New Britain High School after her family had asked him to take her to a school function, the warrant said. She was 15 and he was 21, the warrant said.

That same year, a third incident occurred in a teacher’s office at New Britain High School, she told investigators. She was hoping that he would get caught having sex with her, she told police, “but it did not happen.”

The last incident occurred a few months later, when he gave her alcohol in exchange for her performing a sex act with him. As in the incident at Gaffney Elementary School, she was assaulted in his car, she told police.

Mussman was a New Britain High School football player who also volunteered as a coach at the school. At the time of his arrest, School Superintendent Nancy Sarra said no other complaints regarding Mussman had been reported.

Mussman was recognized for his performance on the football field in the early to mid-2000s and served as a volunteer coach for the Golden Hurricanes freshman team for several seasons. He volunteered at Tebucky Jones’ Youth Football Camp in 2014.

Mussman was paid by the school district as a substitute custodian from 2005 to 2011 and as a tutor from 2010 to 2011, Sarra said.

He was never paid to coach, she added.

He pleaded guilty in March to charges of illegal sexual contact with an underage victim and second-degree sexual assault with a victim under age 13.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, suspended after three years served, and 10 years’ probation for each count. The sentences will be served concurrently, court officials said.
