BRISTOL - Crystal Diner has some big changes planned, as it is looking to stay open for dinner during the week and serve as a 24-hour diner on the weekends.

“There’s really no place like that,” said Alex Hamzy, who co-owns the diner with his wife, Salma.

Hamzy, who normally closes sometime between 1-2 p.m., said he is planning on hiring five more people, including a chef. The diner, he said, will soon be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. They will also be open 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday, and close at 10 p.m. on Sundays.

“Dinner prices will be affordable for everyone,” Hamzy said.

Currently, Crystal Diner serves breakfast and lunch, with a menu featuring hot dogs, melts, sandwiches, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, burgers and more. But Hamzy said he will have a completely new menu for dinner.

“There is no place to eat dinner in Bristol.”

“People look for affordable food. They go to Southington, Farmington, West Hartford. I will definitely have a special every night,” he said.

In addition to the expanded hours and menu, Hamzy is also planning renovations to his restaurant, located at 43 Main St. The grill, which is currently visible in the dining room, will be moved into the kitchen. This will make way for 15 more seats.

“I’m really comfortable thinking the place will get busy,” Hamzy said.

He added that he’s going forward with this ambitious undertaking because he still enjoys working.

“I’m 66. I don’t want to retire.”

“We’ve been around for 75 years,” Hamzy said. “We’re an icon in town.”
