BRISTOL - Dr. Davia H. Shepherd, chiropractor and clinical nutritionist with Saporito Chiropractic, wants people to know that if they are experiencing pain they do not have to live with it.

Shepherd got her start at the chiropractic practice at 665 Terryville Ave. in 2010.

The practice itself has been in the community for 31 years. For her tenure, Shepherd boasts that 90 percent of patients who came to her experiencing pain are able to leave her building pain-free. Her methods include soft tissue manipulation and joint manipulation.

“When patients come to me experiencing headaches, neck pain or back pain, I give them a full orthopedic neurologic evaluation,” said Shepherd. “Pain can feel like it is one thing when it is something else entirely and we need to figure out what is going on. Is it neck pain or is something wrong with your lungs?”

After Shepherd makes her assessment, she determines if it is appropriate for her to treat the patient or to refer them to a specialist for whatever other issue they may be having.

“According to the Center for Disease Control, 80 percent of Americans experience back pain at some point,” she said. “Unfortunately, many of them are under the misconception that that pain has to be a part of their lives. It is our view that everyone should be pain free. People are always telling me that they thought they would have had to live with constant pain and that they are so glad that we were able to help them.”

Shepherd will also provide patients with rehabilitation exercises that they will be able to perform at home. She also uses her knowledge as a clinical nutritionist to inform patients about things they are eating that could lead to pain and inflammation.

“I give them advice about things that they can do to better their general nutrition and maybe lower their cholesterol a bit while they are at it,” said Shepherd.

Shepherd said that Saporito Chiropractic has been a part of the community for a long time and that it has no plans to leave. If anything, she said that they are considering expanding and bringing in more health care providers.

Saporito Chiropractic encourages people to call ahead and book an appointment.

They are open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
