BRISTOL - Dynamite Deals supermarket and discount store is officially open.

The mayor, city officials, city councilors and members of the public joined store employees and owner for a grand opening and ribbon cutting event Monday afternoon.

As city councilors and city officials held the ribbon in the front entrance of the store, Michael Mortorano, store owner, and Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu, cut it together to commemorate the store’s official opening.

“We’re glad to have a grocery store in downtown,” Zoppo-Sassu said. “It’s perfect for people in downtown, and is necessary for a vibrant downtown.”

The store has a community focus, explained Justin Malley, executive director of the Bristol Development Authority.

“They offer fresh food and great deals, but since day one, they’ve had a community focus,” Malley said, citing that the focus can be seen in the store’s employment model.

The store employs individuals who are part of prison work release programs. The programs aim to help many of these individuals get on their feet by allowing them to work and save money before being released.

Dynamite Deals is located at 15 Memorial Blvd., the location of the former Associated Supermarket. The store’s business model is three-quarters supermarkets and one-quarter soft goods.

Mortorano took control of the new location on Nov. 22, and had a soft opening on Black Friday.

The store is still a work in progress, he said, but it is fully stocked with an array of different products.

Robert Wilson, store manager, said there are plans for additions to the store.

In the near future, the store also plans to offer more products and work with more local vendors, he added.
