BRISTOL - The newly elected City Council met for its first meeting Tuesday night and appointed a new corporation counsel and assigned councilors to committees, boards and liaison positions.

The City Council unanimously appointed Dale Clift to serve as the city’s corporation counsel and Jeffrey Steeg to serve as the city’s assistant corporation counsel. Both were administered their oaths during the council meeting and will be serving two-year terms.

“We do have two attorneys that serve full-time as staff to the City of Bristol, but we have a Corporation counsel and an assistant corporation counsel who serve terms concurrent with that of the mayor,” Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu said.

The City Council also unanimously voted to assign the newly elected officials to committees, boards and liaison positions for the next two years.

However, Zoppo-Sassu said that “due to the minority representation” of Republicans on the council and state law, Councilor Dave Mills will be serving on all of the council committees “in order for us to comply with those laws.” Though, she explained that he will not be assigned to any liaison positions in order to balance the workload between councilors.
