To the Editor:

The Bristol Historical Society, as other organizations, had to curtail programming and was unable to open during the covid-19 pandemic. This certainly impacted finances and the ability of BHS to raise the revenues needed to pay such standard bills as electricity, heating and insurance costs amongst others.

In an effort to raise the needed revenues, BHS designed two separate medallions or holiday ornaments. The first was in the form of a heart, designed to thank the first responders and volunteers or anyone, such as neighbors or friends that assisted in making the pandemic crisis less difficult. The second, in collaboration with Bristol Hospital/Bristol Health, was to recognize and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bristol Hospital A total of 550 ornaments were purchased by BHS. The covid medallion sold out quickly and only 15 hospital ornaments remain for future sales.

The other major fundraiser was an outdoor market held in our parking lot on Friday, Dec. 11. A committee of approximately six members organized and ran this affair. Numerous individuals donated items that were organized into approximately one hundred gift baskets. Other people donated new or slightly used items that could be sold. The fair was a great success with excellent attendance and certainly assisted our organization in raising necessary revenue.

The Bristol Historical Society wishes to extend our thanks to the Bristol Press for the excellent publication regarding the sales of ornaments, as well as, the before and after publications regarding the outdoor market. With the pandemic limiting our exposure the ornament sales and the fair could not have been so successful without this coverage.

A special thanks also goes out the City of Bristol committee that administers the farmers market. Through this venue our organization was able to get weekly exposure and sell many ornaments.

City True Value Hardware on Farmington Avenue this year, as every year, generously permitted BHS sale of ornaments at their store. This was especially crucial this season with the loss of many other venues due to the pandemic. BHS would also like to thank Joe Englert and his staff in assisting us with a tent rental and setup, especially in an off-season time!

Finally, the Bristol Historical Society extends heartfelt thanks and well-wishes to Bristol Health for their assistance and to everyone that purchased ornaments. To the many that volunteered, donated or contributed in any way to the Christmas Fair your generosity is greatly appreciated.
