As a tribute to the cast members of the 2017 Older Members Show and the fine work they do to support the Boys and Girls Club of Bristol, we bring you this invitation to a joyous evening and encourage you to ‘get in the spirit.’ This song, written by O.M. group member Joe Roy more than two decades ago and performed by club members annually since, will be part of this year’s show tonight. If you, like many central Connecticut residents, have been questioning the tough times we live in and where we are going as a society, O.M. encourages you to read the words and pay attention to the message. And if you haven’t seen it performed by the O.Ms. at the annual show, we suggest that you make the time to be at St. Paul’s High School in Bristol at 7:30 p.m. tonight or 11:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Proud to be an O.M.
Words and music by Joe Roy
I asked myself some time ago
What is the old world coming to?
And then again I asked myself
Is there something that I can do?
And if I were to start
In doing my own part
I think I’d have to begin
By helping the children.
Helping that child to grow
Into the dreams of tomorrow
That’s an OM
And I’m proud to be one of them.
Let’s make a place where kids can play
Where they can grow in their own way
A place where they can just belong
And they can learn to get along
And when the job is done
Each child will be someone
With dreams and plans of their own,
Say, look! That child has grown.
For many years now in a row
We’ve put on our annual O.M. Show
To give our local kids a chance
To use their talents to sing and dance.
So that each one of them would live
In the glow of what they could give
Taking pride in being a part
In the touching of many a heart.
The men who make this all come true
Are ordinary men like you
Except they stand especially tall
By helping kids when they are small.
That’s the kind of man
I’d like to be if I can
And that’s why I’m one of them
And proud to be an O.M.
