It’s almost here - the long-awaiting spring opening of the New Britain Bees’ second season. The baseball team will begin the 2017 year at 6:35 p.m. tomorrow against the York Revolution.

We’re excited and we hope you are, too, both because we love the game and because General Manager Gerry Berthiaume has promised a season of fun and family entertainment, including fireworks after every Saturday game.

“We’re going to bring the entertainment value to another level this season,” Berthiaume told the Herald this week.

Sure. We know. There’s a lot of noise coming out of Hartford about the former Rock Cats team and their new stadium. But, with all the hullabaloo comes warnings about traffic - and higher prices.

How much more relaxing it will be to make the brief trip to a renovated New Britain Stadium to enjoy something for the whole family - $1 hot dogs on Mondays, discounted four-packs of tickets and concessions on Wednesdays, and soft-serve ice cream at every game, with special family-oriented events throughout the season. Or, for fans 21 and older, the third base side patio will offer a full bar serving liquor, wine and beer.

And ticket prices start at as low as $5 for bleacher seats, with some ticket packages including a parking pass.

It goes without saying that we’ll be there Friday night and throughout the season. We hope you’ll be there, too.

Not only will you have old-fashioned fun but you will be supporting the city and continuing a 35-year-old tradition of baseball in New Britain.
