Name: Mary Fortier
Candidate for office: City Council 3rd district, Democrat
Place of residence: Bristol
Education: Boston College
Public service experience: Currently on city council and part of the newly formed Housing Code of Appeals Board.
What do you hope to achieve if elected? Her biggest goal for Bristol now is to get the renovation of the Memorial Boulevard Theater off the ground. She said, “I see the theater as a showpiece of Bristol and a catalyst for future downtown development.” She wants Bristol to articulate a strategy and direction and then follow through on it. She said, “I don’t think we have a big picture game plan and as a result, it makes it harder to engage our citizens and other stakeholders when we want to get something done.”
Message to voters: Fortier encouraged Bristol residents to vote for her re-election because she said that she “listens to people, gives people information and makes decisions with common sense.”, “We have a higher percentage of citizens over 65 than most of our neighboring cities,” she said. “We have to address the needs of that group and help them remain in their homes, but, also provide the resources and services that will attract young families when those seniors want to sell their homes.”
