Name: Patricia Queen

Candidate for office: Board of Education

Town: Southington

Party: Republican

Years on Board of Education: 7

Goal if elected: “Create a culture where all students take ownership of their learning and graduate with the essential skills to be life-long learners; world language programming at all elementary schools across the district; and a high school transcript that goes beyond grades to include a portfolio of student work.”

Message to voters: ““Each time I run for the BOE, I say that the pathway to excellence seems to me to be so clear but that the reality of limited resources is the challenge. This year that is the case more than ever before as the years of a state government in fiscal jeopardy have reached a point of crisis. As a Board of Education, we have always worked diligently to maintain fiscal discipline as has the Town of Southington. Possible cuts in state funding have the potential to be devastating to education. If necessary, we will use our judgment and experience as well as the advice of our administrative leadership to do our best to make whatever decisions are necessary, but I hope it doesn’t come to that. Public education is too important. As Mark Twain said in 1900, ‘... out of public schools grows the greatness of the nation.’”
