CCSU men come back, women unable to pull out win in Thursday split with LIU

Central Connecticut men’s basketball (5-16, 2-6 NEC) snapped a six-game losing streak on Thursday, defeating LIU (8-11, 5-4 NEC) 65-62 after erasing a 19-point first-half deficit.

The difference swelled to 19 at 29-10 near the midway point of the first half, matching its largest deficit ever deficit in a win (last was against Scared Heart in 2007). CCSU closed the first hal on an 8-1 run, erasing some of the deficit entering halftime down 10.

The Blue Devil men opened the second half with seven straight points to erase the deficit, and wound up taking the lead near the midway point of the second half off a pair of free throws from Andre Snoddy to make it 46-45.

The game and comeback was put to bed with 10 seconds to go with two Trenton McLaughlin free throws to make it 65-62.

Central was led in scoring by 19 points from Ian Krishnan who sunk six 3-pointers. Krishnan also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Off the bench Tre Mitchell had 10 points with five rebounds.

CENTRAL WOMEN FALL TO LIU

Central’s women’s basketball team fell to LIU, seeing a late surge from the Sharks in a 74-67 final.

The Blue Devil women led by eight through the first quarter at 22-16, but saw its lead shrink to two at 34-32 entering intermission.

The lead dwindled to one at the end of the third quarter, with both sides trading leads through the frame. Central’s lead grew to five early in the fourth, but a layup score from Tayra Eke took the lead on a layup score to make it 61-60, putting LIU ahead. LIU didn’t surrender the lead for the rest of the night.

Ashley Berube scored her 1,000th point with the Blue Devils in the game, scoring a team-high 21 points. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds with two assists.

Claire Sutherland-Case, Forever Toppin and Dejah Jenkins each scored nine poins.

Dallas Carter led LIU in scoring with 18 points, sinking six 3-point scores off the bench.
