CCSU men, women's hoops drop Tuesday games

Central Connecticut men’s and women’s basketball dropped two contests this week, both on Tuesday night, to non-conference opponents.

The men’s team lost to Stony Brook Tuesday night, losing 87-67, while the women lost to Rutgers in a 56-45 final.

For the men’s game, CCSU briefly held a lead in the first few minutes at 7-4, but a 16-0 swung the game into Stony Brook’s favor before the first half hit its midway point at 22-7.

The lead extended, and entering halftime the Blue Devils trailed 47-30. CCSU kept the scoring differential nearly even in the second half, but were unable to gain significant ground in the second half.

Nigel Scantlebury led all scorers with 17 points on 7 of 16 shooting. He also led the team in rebounds with seven.

Trenton McLaughlin and Jayden Brown each had 13 points in the loss. Tre Mitchell scored 12 points off the bench. CCSU men’s hoops now sit at 2-9.

The CCSU women fell behind early, trailing 22-8 through the first quarter after 5-0 run to open the game elevated into a 14-point difference in the first. CCSU put in the work to bring the game close to even in the second a half, entering halftime down 36-29 due to a 17-6 run in favor of blue and white.

Scoring would slow in the second half, with Rutgers outscoring CCSU 12-6 in the third quarter and CCSU outscoring Rutgers 10-8 in the fourth. The difference proved to be enough for the Scarlet Knights to hold on for the win.

Ashley Berube led CCSU in scoring with 14 points, going 6-for-10 from the field. Belle Lanpher scored 11 points as the only other Blue Devil in double-digit scoring.

Forver Toppin grabbed five rebounds, a team-high, while Berube, Toppin and Lanpher shared the high for the team in steals with three. Lanpher led in assists with four.

As of Thursday night the CCSU women sit at 1-6 on the season.
