Central Connecticut's third quarter score off the legs of Romelo Williams with seven minutes left in the third quarter gave the Blue Devils a lead it didn't surrender Saturday afternoon in the Blue Devils' 21-19 win over Wagner.
Wagner held a 10-3 lead through the first half, getting a rushing score from Naiem Simmons and a field goal from Austin Hozier. CCSU's lone score in the first half came off a receiving touchdown by Jiovanny Pierre from six yards out.
In the second half, a field goal from Hozier extended the margin slightly, but not far enough to keep CCSU out of reach. Williams' score after completing a 50-yard pass to Tyshaun James to put CCSU in the redzone gave the Blue Devils a chance to reel in Wagner.
Williams' score gave the Blue Devils its first lead of the game, and was one it held through the third after Wagner missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. The lead was extended on a 60-yard drive that ended in an Everett Wormley receiving score from 34 yards out with 11:01 left in the game.
Wagner's answer came in the following drive, which was a 12 play 77-yard journey across the field that ended in a Jaalon Frazier pass to Jayvin Little for an 18-yard touchdown at 5:34. The score remained 21-19 following the score as CCSU stopped two two-point conversion attempts, sucking the wind out of Wagner with 5:34 remaining in the game.
Wagner had an opportunity to take a lead late, getting as close as the 20-yard line, but a false start and a stopped rushing attempt forced Wagner to attempt a 43-yard field goal.
Hozier's kick was no good, sailing just wide left to turn the ball over to CCSU with 1:11 left in the game.
The Blue Devils kneeled out the clock to win its first Northeast Conference game of the season, improving to 1-1.
Williams finished the day 12-for-23 with 154 yards through the air and two passing scores. He also had 32 yards gained on the ground.
Nasir Smith led in rushing for CCSU with 74 yards on 17 attempts. Wormley led in receiving with 105 yards on four catches.
