Central Connecticut State University opens the 2021-22 football season under the lights of Arute Field against Southern Connecticut Friday, kicking off football at home for the school for the first time since it took the 2019 Northeast Conference crown.

Fans wishing to attend Fridays’ game are asked to review the fan attendance policy for the fall and winter sports at CCSU. No tailgating is allowed on the campus for tomorrow’s game or any future CCSU home games.

After collecting one first-place vote in the preseason NEC poll, the Blue Devils have gone through camp with a chip on their shoulders and ready to get back on top of the conference. With Senior Tre Jones named to the Stats Perform PFC Buck Buchanan Award preseason watch list (awarded to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS), the Blue Devils bring a savvy and talented defensive leader back on the field this season.

Jones was an all-NEC first-team pick in 2019 with 58 stops, 14 ½ coming for a loss, and eight sacks.

Also receiving some recognition during preseason were offensive linemen and defensive back Dexter Lawson, both getting preseason All-American recognition. Lawson was also a Stats FCS preseason All-America team pick and was a HERO Sports FCS preseason All-America third-team selection. On top of both honors, he was named to the preseason all-NEC team.

Lawson also had HERO Sports preseason All-America recognition, cracking the third team.

Head coach Ryan McCarthy’s second season as the head of the program. A previous NEC Co-Coach of The Year recipient, he finished fifth in voting for the Eddie Robinson Award, which is awarded to the FCS National Coach of The Year.

The Blue Devils kick off Friday at 6 p.m. The game can be watched at
