Central Connecticut State University men’s soccer (0-1) dropped its season opener on the road Monday night, falling to University of Rhode Island (1-0) in a 2-0 final.

An early score from the Rams in the first seven minutes by Rafa Villanueva set the tone early, giving the Blue Devils something to chase through the next 83 minutes. The equalizer for CCSU never came, as it was only able to tally three shots with two finding their way on target.

URI fired 18 shots, eight finding goalkeeper Jason Dubrovich. He made six stops.

The second goal of the game proved to be a dagger in the 76th minute from Patrick Agyemang. His header off a free kick was assisted by Cian Purcell, who also had the primary assist on Villanueva’s score.

CCSU had three corner kicks in the second half, generating opportunities, but none were able to find twine. The Blue Devils had four corners in total to URI’s six. Both sides had seven fouls with yellow cards going to CCSU’s Brian Son and Johnny Morell.

Defensemen Jakob Welle-Smogeli and Ola Telje had both shots on goal for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will hit the field again on Thursday when they travel to Rider, with kick off coming at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will then travel home to take on Harvard on Sunday at 3 p.m.
